Welcome to Written Statement
You never know what you're missing until it's gone, and you never
need it until it's no longer yours to have. "Ann come on" that's me,
Ann Gosfrye, "I'm coming" "well there going to be closed if you
keep taking your oh so sweet time!" That's my best friend, Kiandra
Perkins. She's great but always in a rush to get to the next store
before it shuts. That's how life works, running before doors shut in
your face, literally and metaphorically speaking. We got to the next
store just before they closed but they refused to let us wander for
too long. "So" Kiandra said as she walked the isles, ignoring the
closing signs "how are you going?" "I'm alright" I said and tried to
quickly change the subject. Kiandra didn't need to worry about me,
no one did. "How about you, anything new with Patrick?" Patrick
Michaels was Kiandra's boyfriend and a well-paid actress, he
spoiled Kiandra rotten, but she was happy, that's what money does
to people, it makes them happy. ""Ugh, he's... how do I put this;
boring!" she said after ar minute "he doesn't want to party or laugh,
or smile" she said a hint of sadness in her expression and tone.
"Maybe he's just real busy?" I guessed "Perhaps" she replied,
"Anyways-" she was cut off by the store manager telling us to leave
(in not so nice words). ""How rude, no one has manners these days"
For Willam
snorted at that, her British accent making that sentence sound
particularly snotty. She
I got home that night just after 9, my little brother Lance was all
tucked into bed fast asleep. I made my way to the kitchen and put
some 2 minute noodles in the microwave. "Can I have some?"
Lance popped his head around the corner "Jillian didn't feed you
again?" jillian Caspes was Lances mum and my step mum. "Nah,1
didn't do the dishes so.." so wasn't a good.enough excuse. Sure
I'll put in double" 1 smiled, trying to make him feel comforted. The
microwave beeped and I grabbed two bowls. "How was school?"
"Ugh it was nothing much, as usual.." he trailed off "Chris is still
bulling me, I hate it. All the teachers love him because his mums
always volunteering" Just then, Jillian walked down the corridor,
her footsteps echoing in the walls. "I told you that you didn't get
any!" she yelled at Lance "no dishes no food! And it's not my fault
chris Brady'" she said in a high pitch mocking voice "is so amazing,
at least he's probably grateful to his mother" "it's not his fault!" 1
interrupted, I should have kept my mouth shut like 1 always did
"You," she turned to me "girls like you don't get to raise their
voices. Get him to bed!" I grabbed Lances hand and I took him to
his room quickly, "I'll bring it up in 10" Iwhispered to him as I
tucked him in. I came back out to the kitchen and Jillian Caspes was
gone.
Narrowed her dark brown eyes at my bad sense of humour. "Come
on" Isaid trying to lighten up the mood "let's go get some frozen
yogurt, there open until 8pm!" We got to the frozen yogurt shop
just in time. "I'm thinking of dropping out of collage" Kiandra
dropped the bomb, "Why- when did you decide this?" I can't sayl
was overly shocked collage never had been her thing, rich thing
coming from someone who doesn't have to pay for their
own
tuition, scholarships only covered so much-. cut that thought off
before it could go any further, it's not her fault she was born into a
huge family with rich supply's and that I wasn't. "A while ago" she
finally replied with her head down. "Hey I'm sorry I- 1 didn't mean
t like that" I hugged her, tight. "1 know, I'm just- Ifeel bad that
your.." that's what people did, gave you there pity even when you
didn't want it and I for one didn't want any of it. "Don't you dare
feel bad about this because of me" I told her sternly "it's not your
fault I can't pay for my tuition, it's not your fault can't get more
shifts, none of it is your fault so don't" I turned away from her and
started walking towards my car. "I know you hate people's pity"
she called after me ."But you don't have to be so damn rude about
refusing it" she laughed
I made my way to the bus first thing in the morning, school was 40
minutes away. "Oh my god she did not?!" Leanha and Kiandra
where saying, "I know I know" I said "but I can't just ignore what
she's saying, no Jillian means no job which means no collage" "you
can't just do whatever she says for the rest of your life, sure,
without Jillian you don't have a job at the café, but you have to
have your own life and meet boys and go on dates and get a fun
job and not be stuck under her roof" I raised an eyebrow at Leena's
remark, "yes to everything but going on dates" "so it's a yes to
meeting boys!" Kiandra piped in. 1 rolled my eyes and shook my
head. "I don't have any other jobs that's the problem" 1 whinnied
"don't worry' Kiandra put an arm on my shoulder "well find you
something". We made it to class with 22 seconds to spare and only
because the bell goes 37 seconds late on Fridays. ""Good morning
Miss Gosfrye, Miss Perkins, l'm still waiting on the report from
you" our teacher said as we walked in the class, "just putting on
some finishing touches" Kiandra turned back to me with a dreaded
face on her look, otherwise saying she hadn't even started. Mrs
Taylor turned to Leena "and Miss Dallas, lovely to see you showed
up today" Leena rolled her eyes. class started and was as boring as.
usual, max got attacked by a bug. check. Marry rolled his ankle.
Check. Chloe sneezed one too many times. Yep. Harry rolls the
other ankle. Same old. Until it wasn't, "Miss Gosfrye, would you
like to answer this question?" that wasn't a request. I nodded
Anyway, give me a quick explanation of pie, (explains pie) she turned away I smile.. Blah... Blah
Once lesson was over we had a free period, I made my way down
the corridor to our regular hangout spot past the drink fountain,
and the principal's office. I couldn't help myself on my way past the
student wellbeing office, I craned my head to the side to have a
look inside, and a tall dark haired boy was staring back at me.
Leena called my name and I glanced towards her for a second
When I looked back-. The boy was gone. I walked towards her ""I
have to leave early today" I told her as we walked down the
hallway "why?" she exclaimed "I have to be home before Lance
gets home.. early finish 1 explained when she looked confused.
"What did we just talk about this morning?" I looked down,
"repeat after me" she continued "my life, my choice" I stared at
her, "say she told me sternly "my life, my choice" I said
forcefully "good" she smiled, I rolled my eyes. ""Even if it is 'my life*
and 'my' choice, its my choice to do this for Lance, she's not
making me this time, I promise" she didn't look convinced so I
continued "Lance doesn't like to be home alone with his mother,
and I already left him last night so l'm not doing it again, ill fake
sick or something it ll be fine" we walked in silence for minute, "I'm
going to be fine" I turned to her and smiled, "sure" she smiled back
and rolled her eyes.
As I was heading down to the principal's office I kept my eyes
peeled for the boy. As I approached the office door I reached for
the handle but the door opened before I could. The boy walked out
and bumped into me. "Sorry" he said as he stared at me, his voice
was deep but kind. When I didn't respond he smiled, I didn't realise
I was staring but 1 walked past him resisting the urge to glance
back. "What can I help you with" in some way I could still feel the
boy's eyes on me, I ignored it. "1 need to go home" "why is that"
"My step mother wants me home before she is because my little
brother is going to be there alone"
She stared at me for a moment before asking me to take a seat in
the waiting area. 1 leaned forward slightly to see if the boy was still
there. He wasn't. "You' re free to go" said the office lady.
I made my way home, getting there 10 minutes earlier than Lance
Just then I got a phone call from a private number. ""Hello?" "Is this
Ann Gosfrye?" All business This is she" "I am Rhianna Bailey, Mrs
Natalie's assistant" she paused, long enough that I wasn't sure if
shed hung up "Allow me to continue, you have been selected as
one in six competitors of the Coast Apprehensive Program. Are you
following" it took me minute to recover my voice, I didn't think
what I was hearing was real "um yes I'm following but-"" "we will
have plenty of time for questions once I explain to you the rest of
the programs policy's, rules and alliance code. Coast Apprehensive
Program, CAP, is a program more or less, but also a competition, it
is hosted in San Francisco where Mrs Natalie's house is located,
she has chosen a select amount of students, around your age, with
the highest l0 to join her this year, and you will of course be
rewarded for your participation in this program." she stopped "You
may now ask questions"
"Who am I going in this program with? Do vou mean Mrs Lynette
Natalie's house? And how do I get there and-"
"l will send you a list of your competitors, Mrs Lynette Noni
Natalie, you will be taking a private jet and any other questions you
have you may email Mrs Natalie via me" the line went dead
Ş$ssçssssssssssssssssssssssssssssSSS
SSS
And you will of course be rewarded for your participation in this
program..the only thing stopping me from getting on that private
jet, was Lance. I couldn't let him be left alone for who knows how
long. His father died when he was two. When his mum married my
dad lance was five, he thought we had a new big family, and I
guess we did, until my dad left. Turns out he just wanted the free
child care from Jillian. "I'm home!" Lance walked in cheery and
smiling, this might be the only good time to bring up that I might
be leaving: "Hey buddy, how was your day?"
